MNG Cargo Uses Zebra Solutions to Scale Its Operations

There has been a serious change in the Turkish e-commerce sector in recent years. The rapid growth in a short time with the effect of the pandemic forced all companies to review their working styles and adapt. The increase in e-commerce volume by almost 60 percent and the dominant changes in customer expectations primarily affected cargo companies.
MNG Cargo, one of Turkey’s leading cargo companies, made a serious technological investment in this process. MNG Cargo currently delivers world-class services to 700 thousand addresses a day from one end of Turkey to the other and in 220 different countries around the world. The main reason for this project was the change in the strategic focus of MNG Cargo. Previously, he worked mainly in corporate. However, with the ongoing demand, it started to serve the individual market as well. Accordingly, its business volume has almost doubled and MNG Cargo has decided to completely renew the technological infrastructure used in field operations in line with the requirements of the day.

Transition to Expedient Technology

Cengiz Yılmaz, IT Director of MNG Cargo; “We were using smartphones in the field operation. As these devices got older and the workload increased, so did the problems. We started to detect a high rate of breakage and distortion. Since the teams have to do manual data entry, the poor barcode reading performance leads to inefficiencies and errors in the workflow; limited battery life was also a problem. The increase in the need for repairs also increased the costs. For this reason, we decided to switch to the use of corporate mobile devices. And we planned a technology change process to establish a compatible and flexible infrastructure in order to replace mobile phones with hand terminals to solve the problems experienced in the field. After the investment cost study, we started the project.” told in his words.

Luna Group, an expert in field support and maintenance, was chosen as the technology business partner of MNG Cargo. MNG Cargo developed the software for mobile devices in-site, while Luna Group advised on mobile device selection.

Technical testing was conducted with a wide range of products, with 10 devices from Zebra as well as other manufacturers. MNG Cargo’s technical team completed the technical evaluation before the performance tests to be carried out in the field.

Speed, convenience and accuracy of barcode scanning performance were determined as the most important criteria as each package is scanned throughout its journey. The battery life of the device used and its resistance to bumps and drops were also critical factors considered.

Process completion time and user feedback data from field tests were analyzed. Completion of the deadline and All results; brought the TC57 Industrial Mobile Computer forward with its robustness, perfect barcode reading performance, ease of use, processing speed and outstanding battery capacity.

A Smooth and Efficient Transition

By starting to use Zebra TC57s, MNG Cargo has had the opportunity to take NEXT, the software it developed in-site, to the next level. Luna Group has made 4000 TC57 devices can be integrated with different applications by replacing the sim cards one by one and performing the necessary operations on the device. In this way, other projects that MNG Cargo wanted to implement through NEXT were also realized. Thanks to the new version of NEXT running on TC57s, the features of receiving contactless payments by credit card and providing data and voice communication have been added. Thus, all field workers became able to run courier applications and maintain communication with the outside world on a single device.

Another output of the MNG Cargo, Zebra and Luna Information Technologies cooperation was the updating of approximately 3000 Zebra printers, which are widely used in the field, to ensure error-free barcode printing. With a software developed by Luna Information Technologies, the printheads were tracked and detected before a problem occurred, and the need for replacement became apparent. With this solution, MNG Cargo has achieved a 100% traceable device infrastructure.

Upon completion of the project, a ZEBRA OneCare Service and Support contract was signed to provide help desk support and fast repair turnarounds to ensure operations are uninterrupted and devices continue to function properly. With One Care, service quality was guaranteed for five years and a manageable and traceable infrastructure was provided.

Technology Transformation with Reliability at its Center

The project provides improvements in key areas. Field teams are very happy with the devices that allow them to do their work more efficiently and fluently. Customer service has improved with real-time tracking data and pay-on-delivery option. Advanced capabilities and operational visibility mean that MNG Cargo not only has the capacity to scale to handle the spike in deliveries, but also to adapt seamlessly to any future demand spikes. Also, the rugged nature of mobile devices means that MNG Cargo has seen a huge reduction in maintenance costs associated with support and repairs. And with the OneCare contract, which is in effect for five years, it has a reliable corporate platform where it can safely run its business at predictable costs.
